When I found out a good friend of mine was prego I was elated for her and her husband. I offered to take her maternity photographs and she agreed. Then I remembered that I had never done a maternity portrait session. The type of session was new to me. That is where my homework began. I spent hours reviewing posing guides, reading articles and studying maternity photographs. I am so glad I did. The resulting images were simply beautiful.
Photo Tip: Maternity Photography
- Create S curves – Have the expecting mother “pop” her foot closest to the camera to create beautiful curves.
- Get creative and interact – Use lots of props that have meaning. A book she can’t wait to read to her baby. Toys that have been given by a grandparent. And don’t forget to involve the father!
- Focus on the love of the bump – cradling the “bump” is a very maternal and natural placement of the hands and arms.
I’d love to have you join me for my Project 52, even if it is only for a month or sporadically throughout the year. Every month, I will provide a list of weekly prompts for you to use to inspire your weekly photos.
